California Secretary of State
Removes Buchanan From Ballot

REFORM PARTY of the United States of America

MEDIA ADVISORY for immediate publication August 24, 2000

Apparently reacting to information received by their office regarding a vote of the Board of Directors of the California Reform Party recognizing the national party organization led by Jim Mangia, the Secretary of State's office in California yesterday removed Pat Buchanan from the ballot as the
presidential candidate of the Reform Party.

Buchanan's name had been certified to the state by California Reform Party Chairman Ray Mills following the party's split convention in Long Beach Aug 10-13. However, at a subsequent meeting of the party's state Board of Directors, by a vote of 7-5, it was decided that the California party would
recognize Jim Mangia as the legally elected national Reform Party Chairman. The convention in Long Beach which elected him also nominated John Hagelin and Nat Goldhaber as the candidates for President and Vice President.

Mangia was elated upon hearing about the letter confirming removal of Buchanan from the California ballot. "For California, the largest voter state in the union, to remove Buchanan is excellent news not just for John Hagelin and Nat Goldhaber, but also for the hundreds of Reform Party delegates who
voted with their feet to join us for a real, democratically conducted convention when the Buchanan campaign locked us out of their kangaroo convention. Bay Buchanan keeps trying to convince people that it's over, that they've won. But this makes it real clear that it's not over...not by a long shot."

The California Secretary of State's letter gives August 31 as the deadline for resolving the controversy over which names should be on the Reform Party line on the ballot in November.
